Dear Parents

On Tuesday we took part in the area finals of the Netball High Five Finals involving 50 schools. The school team gave an incredible performance, winning 5 drawing 2 and only losing to the eventual winners.  This was a huge achievement for all our team and their coaches.  Well done to all the team  -  Alice, Rosie, Ruby, Sarah, Harley, William Regan and Aaron Howard.  Thank you to all the Mums who have helped with coaching.

We are pleased to inform you that we have been given new football kit which we are delighted with.  I would like to thank Independent Slate Supplies and Tony Puffett for their generous donation.  As you can see from the netball photo, the children look wonderful in it.

SCHOOL BOOK FAIR   We have arranged a Book Fair for the school from Thursday 24th April to Wednesday 30th May.  The fair will run for approximately 30 minutes after school each day in the library.  We are also happy for parents to have a ‘child free’ time from 3.00pm if needed.   If there are any parents who could spare some time from 3.00pm on any of the days to help ‘man’ the stalls, please let us know. The school will receive a commission if enough books are sold, which will enable us to update our own reading material.    Attached to the newsletter is an order form if you are unable to attend in person.  All orders should be received by the school by Tuesday 29th April. Thank you.

PTA News

The Body Shop Party is tonight at Sue’s house, 20 Robin Drive, Launceston.  This is a really fun evening so look forward to seeing you there!  Catalogue will be available at the school office if unable to attend.

Our next forthcoming event is the 70’s Disco Night!  Stefan (James’s dad) is doing our disco and lots of preparations are under way for what should be a special night.  So countdown now to sorting out the finer details of your fab costume for a funky Saturday night out on the 3rd May – don’t forget to book your babysitters!  Ticket price is £5 donation and will include home made sangria, buffet and a chance to vote for best dressed person.

You should have all got your info now for our campaign for fones for school – every child will receive a prize according to how many phones they collect and for every 50 phones the school will receive £75!  So get collecting!  We have loads of time until 20th June so we can get prizes sent before the end of term.  Spare collection bags are in the office.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 15th May at 7.30pm

Squash Box Theatre and Film Project     On Friday 25th April, the school is being visited by The Squashbox Theatre.

Some of our year 6 pupils will have the opportunity to film the show for an ongoing project to the end of term. The idea is to create a set of short animations, helping the children to develop the stories from their own ideas.

In order for this to continue throughout the term, we would appreciate several parent helpers to work alongside year 3 & 4 children on Friday mornings.  An introductory session will take place on Tuesday 6th from 1.00pm to 3.00pm, followed by the first workshop on Friday 9th May and subsequently fortnightly (23rd May, 13th June, 27th June, 18th July & Wednesday 9th July).  The workshops will take place in the mornings only.  The whole project will culminate in a film show open to all parents and friends on Friday 25th July.

This is a great opportunity not only for our children to learn about media techniques but for parents also.  If you are able to help, please contact the school.

Launceston & District Twinning Association

As mentioned in the 6th March newsletter, we are twinned with Plestin-Les-Greves in France.  We ( Jack Hogan’s family) are visiting France during May for a weekend.  All of the members travel together by coach across on the ferry.  We stay with host families and day trips are arranged whilst over there.  There are already several children in the Association and we would very much welcome new families.  We meet locally several times during the year for activities which include day trips, bowling, quizzes, safari suppers and treasure hunts etc.  Please don’t hesitate to speak to Anita at the school or telephone 01566 773479 for more information.

HEAD LICE:  We unfortunately seem to have yet another outbreak of head lice in the school. May we please remind everyone that constant head checking and treatment where necessary is the only way that children can be kept free of head lice.  It would also be appreciated if children with hair long enough to be fastened back, do wear it tied back for school.

The current recommendation from Cornwall County Council, is that hair should be checked weekly while wet using a detection comb.  Treatment should only be started when live lice are found; then close contacts, such as family members should be carefully checked and treated.  Recently, approaches to the treatment of head lice have altered.  It is now recommended that both wet combing and insecticides should be used together.  It is possible to use either method on its own but this is less likely to be as effective.

We have been recommended a comb ‘Nitty Gritty Nit Free Head Lice Comb’ as being extremely thorough –available through the internet or telephone orders
